Why we built it
Small businesses in Pakistan already run on trust and the khata. Credit is given on a relationship and written by hand in a register. That system works, but the register is fragile: pages get lost, balances get disputed, and collecting depends on someone remembering. Accounting software was built for a different kind of business and a different kind of day. We did not set out to change how people trade. We set out to make the khata safe, searchable and a little less awkward to collect on. The full story is on the blog.
What Munshi does
- Customer and supplier khata. Tap You gave when goods go out on credit and You got when a payment comes in. Every balance reads in plain words, such as “Ali owes you Rs 3,500”: red is money you will get, green is money you will give.
- Cash Book, bank and expenses. Cash in and cash out, more than one bank account, and expense categories you can rename.
- Reports and statements for any dates, as PDF or Excel, in English or Urdu.
- WhatsApp reminders that open already written. You read the message and press Send yourself. Nothing is sent for you.
- Up to 5 businesses on one account, plus a Personal khata for money you lend or borrow yourself.
- Import your customers from an Excel or CSV file, into the business you choose.
Munshi does not do invoicing, stock or barcodes, payroll, tax calculation, or a connection to a bank account. It does not move money.
Your records stay yours
- It works offline. Entries save on the phone straight away and sync when you are back online.
- Backups go to the phone every day and to your own Google Drive. Sign in with the same number on a new phone and your records come back.
- App Lock is a PIN, with optional fingerprint or Face ID. A deleted entry stays in the Recycle bin for 14 days.
- Customer names, phone numbers and amounts are never shared with advertisers.
How it is paid for
Free to download, with no subscription. A few small ads, marked “Ad”, pay for the servers and for building and supporting the app. Ads never appear while you add an entry, sign in, unlock the app or send a reminder. The details are in the privacy policy, and why Munshi is free explains it in plain words.
How to spot the real Munshi
Munshi is a product of DIGIT, and its website is munshi.com.pk. On the phone the app is named Munshi. On the App Store it is listed as Munshi Khata App. On Google Play the package is pk.digit.munshikhata. It is not Apna Munshi, and it is not other apps that only share the name Munshi. Before you download, check that the developer is DIGIT.
