What’s new in Munshi 1.0.17: Today’s closing, Committees, Hazar and Lakh keys, and reminders to many customers

Checked against the app. Steps and screen names match Munshi 1.0.16. Written for businesses in Pakistan. Last reviewed 28 December 2026.

Munshi 1.0.17 is the new-year update: it makes the first day easier, every entry faster, and the end of the day clearer. You can try a sample khata before signing up, type 25,000 with two taps, see the whole day on one Today’s closing screen, keep track of your committees, and send reminders to many customers in a row. Nothing you had before is gone. This post walks through each change and where to find it. The dated list is always on the changelog.

We built this release from what shopkeepers actually do in the app. Most people write their khata in the evening, between 4 and 9 pm. Many open Munshi, look around, and leave before adding a single customer. Busy shops have dozens of customers and add many entries a day, so every extra tap costs them time. Every change below answers one of those three things.

A better first day

Try a sample khata first

Before you give your phone number, Munshi now shows a small sample khata with three made-up customers. Tap You gave or You got and watch the balance change, then see the WhatsApp reminder Munshi would send for that customer. When you are ready, tap Make your own khata, free. Nothing in the sample is saved, and you can skip it.

Set up in a few taps

The business type is now a set of choices (Kiryana / General store, Wholesale, Medical store, Clothes, Mobile, Hardware, Food, Services, Factory, or Other) instead of a blank box. Currency is picked from a list with Rupees first. If you made your business before this update, Home asks once, “What is this khata for?” One tap answers it, and you can close it if you prefer.

Your first customers, with their old balance

The first-entry screen now takes up to three customers at once, each with what they already owe you (or what you owe them). Pick a name and number straight from your contacts. When you save, Munshi shows what your khata now looks like and offers to send the first reminder on WhatsApp. If you are busy, it can remind you in the evening instead.

Faster entries

  • Hazar and Lakh keys. Type 25 and tap Hazar for 25,000, or 2 and Lakh for 2,00,000. Fewer zeros to type, fewer mistakes.
  • The amount in words. Under the amount box Munshi writes the number in words, in English or Urdu. A missing zero is easy to see before you save.
  • Quick notes. Your most used notes appear as chips under the note box, so “doodh”, “cheeni” or “rent” is one tap.
  • Wrong button? One press. Press and hold an entry in a customer’s khata and choose to switch You gave and You got. The amount, note and date stay the same, and the balance updates.
  • Up to 5 bill photos per entry. Attach every page of a long bill, not just the first.

Today’s closing: the whole day on one screen

Home now has a Today’s closing row. It shows what you gave on udhar today and what you received, cash in and cash out, cash in hand, the total in your bank accounts, what customers owe you and what you owe, and today’s expenses. One button shares it as text on WhatsApp, to a partner or to yourself, so you have a record of every day.

If you turn on the Evening reminder (Settings → Reminders), Munshi reminds you at 7:30 pm. On days you have added entries, the notification shows the totals so far: how much you gave, how much you received, and how many entries. Tap it to open Today’s closing. The reminder is scheduled on your own phone; nothing is sent to a server.

Reminders to many customers

Getting paid is why most people keep a khata, so reminders got the most work.

  1. Open Reminders, tick the customers you want to remind, and tap Send reminders.
  2. Munshi opens WhatsApp for the first customer with the message ready. Send it, come back, and tap Send to the next name, or Skip.
  3. At the end you see how many reminders were opened.

This still uses normal WhatsApp from your own phone, so it costs nothing. If a customer has no number saved, Munshi now offers to pick it from your contacts and saves it on the account, so next time it is one tap. Home also shows a small strip when money is due today or already late, from the due dates you set. For message ideas, see our WhatsApp reminder templates.

Find anything

  • Search every entry. The new Search tool on Home looks through all your entries by note, customer name or amount. Typing 250 also finds 2,500.
  • Roman Urdu and Urdu together. Type “doodh” and Munshi also finds entries written as “دودھ”, and the other way round. People spell Roman Urdu in many ways, so the match is loose on purpose.
  • Filter and sort accounts. Show only customers, only suppliers, or those who have not paid in 30 days, and sort the list. Account search also matches phone numbers.

Committees (BC)

Many shopkeepers are in one or more committees. The new Committees (BC) tool on Home keeps each one: the monthly share, how many members, and which month is your turn. Munshi works out the payout (monthly share × members), marks each month you have paid, tells you when this month’s share is still due, and shows when your committee comes. Committees are kept apart from your customers, so they do not change any balance.

A tidier Home and Settings

The most used tools now sit on Home as tiles: Add customer, Recycle bin, Bank Book and Expenses, Committees and Search, with Today’s closing and Reports right under them. Settings is shorter and grouped. Reminder options are in one place under Settings → Reminders, and help is one tap away: Chat on WhatsApp opens a chat with the Munshi team. If you keep a Personal khata, reports now use personal words, such as money lent and borrowed, instead of business words.

Invite another shopkeeper

If Munshi helps you, Settings → Help → Invite a shopkeeper shares a link to Munshi on WhatsApp. Reminders you send can end with a short “Sent with Munshi” line; you can turn that off under Settings → Reminders.

What did not change

  • Your data. Every customer, entry, photo, backup and setting stays exactly where it was.
  • Offline first. You can add entries without internet, and they sync when you are back online.
  • Free. Munshi shows ads. Exports of this month and last month are free, and the export screen now opens on This month as a PDF.
  • Urdu and English. Every new screen is in both languages. Switch any time from the globe button.
